No Doubt pull 'Looking Hot' video, apologize for offending Native Americans
Did you catch the video for No Doubt’s new single “Looking Hot,” which premiered online on Friday? If you didn’t, it’s gotten harder to find. Shortly after the premiere, the band pulled the clip because of negative reactions to their use of Native American imagery.
In the video, Gwen Stefani dresses up in a fashion-Pocahontas head-dress and is saved from a pair of cowboys (band members Tom Dumont and Adrian Young) by bassist Tony Kanal (who also dresses up in stereotypical teepee-living garb). Though it seemed no more culturally insensitive than Stefani’s melange of Asian imagery during her solo period or No Doubt’s well-documented appropriation of Jamaican ska and reggae culture, it was deemed beyond the pale by YouTube commenters who bombarded the clip with negative comments.
On Saturday, the band issued a long apology on their website. “As a multi-racial band our foundation is built upon both diversity and consideration for other cultures,” they wrote. “Our intention with our new video was never to offend, hurt or trivialize Native American people, their culture or their history. Although we consulted with Native American friends and Native American studies experts at the University of California, we realize now that we have offended people. This is of great concern to us and we are removing the video immediately. The music that inspired us when we started the band, and the community of friends, family, and fans that surrounds us was built upon respect, unity and inclusiveness. We sincerely apologize to the Native American community and anyone else offended by this video. Being hurtful to anyone is simply not who we are.”
The clip is still floating around the Internet, but has otherwise been scrubbed from this official series of tubes. What do you think? Did No Doubt do the right thing? More...

Eclipse Viewing Taboo in Navajo and Other Cultures
Avert Your Eyes: Eclipse Viewing Taboo in Navajo and Other Cultures:
While millions around the world will flock to view the annular solar eclipse on Sunday at sunset, many who are smack in the middle of its shadowy path will avert their eyes. Eclipses are a bad omen in much of Indian country, and the indigenous world in general, from the Navajo to the Maya. Read more: 'via Blog this'

Johnny Depp dresses up as Tonto to meet Navajo Nation president
Johnny Depp met with members of the Native American Navajo Nation on the set of The Lone Ranger
Depp, who plays Tonto in the upcoming Western remake, happily posed for photos with Navajo president Ben Shelly and vice president Rex Lee Jim.
With the Monument Valley in Utah as a fitting backdrop, Depp is seen in the photo sporting dramatic black and white make-up, a head band, and a brightly coloured cloth wrapped around him. The actor has also been given long, braided hair.
The snap comes shortly after a first official image for the film was released, which shows Depp and his co-star, Mirror, Mirror's Armie Hammer, on horseback, in what is tipped to be an exciting reboot that stays true to the original.

Native American Fashion Trends
Fashion trends come and go, but like the little black dress some garb never goes out of style. For decades, footwear, jewelry, purses and clothing with Native American influences have surfaced as fashion staples, cycling in and out of designer collections in any given year. But is this cultural appropriation or high fashion’s attempt to salute indigenous cultures? Clothing chains such as Urban Outfitters have come under fire for labeling their goods “Navajo” with reportedly no input from the Navajo Nation. To boot, bloggers are increasingly taking to task non-Natives who wear headdresses and other indigenous apparel to play a cross-cultural game of dress up of sorts. By supporting indigenous designers and learning more about the missteps the fashion world has made in regards to Native dress, you can avoid making the ultimate fashion faux pas—cultural insensitivity. Heidi And Spencer: Blasted By Native Americans
Heidi And Spencer: Blasted By Native Americans
They recently gave themselves “real Native American” names, and in the process Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt also gained a bunch of new foes.
According to a report, several Native American groups are taking issue with Speidi’s new names, Running Bear and White Wolf.
A member of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe explained, "Continued stereotyping such as this by people ignorant of our traditional ways is very disrespectful and only hurts our efforts to curtail these stereotypes. The names they have given themselves are legitimate names in our tribe.”
Prior to their Native American monikers, Pratt declared himself King Spencer. Later, he ditched the title because it was “too much of a burden to have to carry the weight of royalty.”

Sleeping Beauty Turquoise
Sleeping beauty turquoise comes to us from a mine out of Arizona. It's named after the Sleeping Beauty Mountain originally mined for gold and copper but for over a decade, some of the best turquoise comes from this historic area. I found this video on YouTube to give you an idea of how this beautiful rock transforms in to a gorgeous piece of jewelry!

Native American Pride: Taylor Lautner
Taylor Lautner
credit: Google
EDIT: I realize some folks don’t consider him a Native actor. That’s fine, but I decided to include Lautner, as well as some others, because while they might not be full-blooded Native actors, per se, Native American is part of their blood, and they still deserve to represent that part of themselves if they choose, I think (not in a fetishistic way, of course, but if they really want to explore that side of themselves, I don’t think there should be a “Native enough” argument going on. I say this as a person who has distant Native relations in my family tree and as a person who has often been in a “Black enough” argument do to how I act and conduct myself.)
Occupation: Actor/voice actor/model
Seen in: Shark Boy and Lava Girl in 3-D, the Twilight films, Valentine’s Day,
Tribe: distant relations on his mother’s side to the Ottawa and Potawatomi tribes (Lautner is also German, French, and Dutch)
Hobbies/other talents: Martial arts
Trivia: As of last year, Lautner is considered the highest-paid teenage actor in Hollywood
Quotes: (When talking about his favorite line in Twilight) “It’s not in the first book, but the quote I love the most is Jacob’s quote, ‘Does my half being naked bother you?’ That quote just cracks me up. Because you know, that’s when he’s shirtless, not wearing a top – we’ll have to wait to see what he looks like.”
(On his acting career): “When I was in school, there was a lot of bullying going on…people making fun of what I do…I just had to tell myself I can’t let this get to me. This is what I love to do. And I’m going to continue doing it.”

This Little Piggy...
Did you know that today, March 1st is National Pig Day?
National Pig Day recognizes and gives thanks to domesticated pigs
When : National Pig Day- always March 1st Yellow Pig Day - always July 17th About Pig Days- -
For some unknown reason, big, pot-bellied pigs seen in zoos, are often the symbol of the day. Pigs are clever and intelligent animals. But, most people are unaware of this high level of intelligence. They can be taught to do tricks. Some people even keep them as pets. Today is a day to give pigs the respect that they deserve. National Pig day is celebrated by zoos, too. Activities include Snort Offs, Pig Outs, and online Pig Chats. However you choose, do not miss celebrating this day.
Yellow Pig Day is a mathematician's holiday celebrating yellow pigs (is there such a thing!?!), and the number 17. It is celebrated annually since the early 1960's, primarily on college campuses, and primarily by mathematicians. On campus, Yellow Pig Cake and Yellow Pig Carols are tradition! If you are a mathematician, spend part of the day thinking and working in multiples of 17. And, while you do so, give a little thought to yellow pigs. Another Pig Day? There is also some references to a "Pig Day" on January 17th. We found it in online calendars and on Ecard companies. We did not find it in any published documents. We did not find any factual evidence supporting this day on January 17th. Color of the Day: pink, of course! Origin of National Pig Day and Yellow Pig Day: Ellen Stanley, a Texas art teacher created National Pig Day in 1972. Her intent was to to recognize and be thankful for pigs as intelligent domestic animals. There is no evidence to suggest that this is truly a "National" day, which requires an act of congress. The Yellow Pig was the brainstorm of mathematicians Michael Spivak and David C. Kelly in the early 1960's. They were students at Princeton University, studying mathematics. History was made as they were listing interesting properties of the number 17 (can you imagine the interesting properties!?). During this thought wave, the yellow pig was born. Most likely, it had 17 toes, 17 teeth, 17 eyelashes, etc. The yellow pig and the number 17 have been linked ever since.

Adam Beach
Date of Birth: 11 November 1972
Birth Name: Adam Beach
Place of Birth: Ashern, Manitoba, Canada Adam Beach Height: 5' 11"
Profession: Actor
Movies: Joe Dirt The Last Stop
One of the most visible Native American actors working in films, Adam Beach's recent claim to fame has been the portrayal of a young Native American youth who faces reservations across his own country in the critically acclaimed Clint Eastwood directed World War II drama, 'Flags of Our Fathers' (2006). But before this high profile movie project came Beach's way, he was busy establishing his reputation as a versatile and talented actors in a string of independent movies and assorted TV appearances in meaty roles in many of Hollywood's productions.
Born on 11 November 1972, in Ashren, Canada, Beach belongs to the First Nation of Saulteaux origin (native people of Canada). At the age of eight Beach lost his parents to fatal accidents within a span of three-months. Beach along with his brothers were adopted to be raised by his aunt and uncle and relocated to Winnipeg. Though Beach joined his high school drama club for fun, he promptly fell in love with the art of performing and joined the Manitoba Theatre for Young People after dropping out of school! In 1990, Beach landed his first lead role for on-screen credit in 'Lost in the Barrens', in a supporting role, at the age of 18. More roles followed in other Theatre productions and Canadian TV serials including the lead role in 'Squanto: A Warrior's Tale' (1995), Disney's historical drama. But the movie 'Dance Me Outside' (1995) directed by Bruce McDonald's that can be described as Beach's breakout from 'obscurity to popularity' role! The film was based on W.P. Kinsella's novel and was a big hit due to its wit and style. The success of DMO was followed by the success of a TV spin-off series, 'The Rez' (1995-98) with Beach as one of the cast members. Work started coming in steadily after the success of DMO. In 1996, he married Meredith Porter and fathered two sons (1996 & 1998). 'Smoke Signals' directed by Chris Eyre, and released in 1998 was another career highlight for Beach. This comedy-drama about two young men who try to come to terms with their heritage and families while on a road trip to collect the remains of one man's father was the first ever film to be written, directed, produced, and starring Native American actors.
The movie won several awards doing the rounds of the film festival circuits including the Sundance Film Festival and Independent Spirit Award, and helped Beach turn Hollywood's eyes on himself. 'Mystery, Alaska' (1999), was Beach's first Hollywood role and he spared no effort. This was followed by 'Joe Dirt' (2001), and in 2002, Beach got another great opportunity. He was offered his meatiest role to date, in John Woo's WWII drama 'Windtalkers', where he plays the role of a Navajo soldier whose services are engaged by U.S Army to deliver a code in the native language. Nicholas Cage and Christian Slater were his co-stars. For this role, Beach has to learn to speak Navajo! Though, the film wasn't a huge commercial success, but it gave Beach plenty of frame space to showcase his acting skills and hold his own against Hollywood stalwarts such as Cage! Adam Beach acted in many movies after Windtalkers such as 'Skinwalkers, TV Series 'Third Watch' (NBC, 1999-2005), 'Bottom's Up) (2006) etc. Beach has constantly vowed critics with the singular quality of his performances even in a movie with ensemble cast!
